Sova Dance and Puppet Theater celebrates humanity and the environment by engaging audiences through live performance combining the moving body, puppetry, mask, video, dance, and artistic installations. The combined ingredients communicate that which cannot be described in words, and therefore are accessible to communities around the globe.

“Sova” means “owl” in Slovak and also refers to an asteroid belt named by a Czech astronomer.

 2023 marks Sova Dance & Puppet Theater’s 10th anniversary with a tour that included Wolf Trap Children’s-Theatre-in-the-Woods nestled in our nation’s only National Park dedicated to the Performing Arts just outside of D.C.

Workshops

The Moving Body

Designed to increase flexibility, balance, coordination for adults whether for the stage or everyday, offering a unique blend of dance techniques, improvisational exercises and movement sequences that prepare the body and mind for performance.

Movement and Mask

Introduces various body work techniques used to approach the creation of a character through the physical presence. Increases individual strength, stamina and stage presence. Spoken words, emotions and body language become more powerful with the consideration of posture, breath and gesture.

Artists Residencies

Participants skilled from diverse mediums collaborate in this creative process to make art together. Available for Grades PrK, K-12. Stage movement and puppetry techniques available for universities. We are also in process of developing more programming for seniors to develop a new skill with peers, having just completed training for “Creative Aging” through Lifetime Arts. While we have some workshops available for 3 part residencies available in 2 sessions we prefer 8-10 sessions.
